Screen red flags: suicidal thoughts, specific plan or intent, previous attempt, psychosis, mania.
Repair medical jargon with patient-friendly explanations and check understanding.
Explain first tests in plain English: risk assessment, mental state exam cues, screen for mania/psychosis, substance assessment.
Summarize, invite correction, and give specific safety-netting language.
